New Jersey Scientists 124, Portland Bats 116
Neil deNasty was borderline impossible to stop on Saturday, finishing 8-of-9 from the field for 24 points, 7 assists, and zero turnovers in 24 minutes, posting a plus-15 and a game score of 25 as the Scientists beat the Portland Bats 124-116. The box score read like a misprint. It wasn't.
Portland hung close through the middle quarters, leaning on Baller #18's 10-of-14 shooting night for 24 points and four triples off the wing. But New Jersey's supporting cast made that fight unsustainable. Baller #58 knocked in 4-of-6 from three and finished 20 points on 6-of-9 shooting, while Baller #24 was even more surgical, going 7-of-8 from the floor for 17 points, 4 rebounds, and a team-best plus-21. The Scientists shot the ball clean all night, and Portland had no answer for the volume of quality looks New Jersey generated.
deNasty was the story, though. The 8-of-9 line was surgical in a way that rarely holds up over a full game, but he was consistently in the right spot, attacking closeouts, drawing fouls when he wanted to, and finding cutters when the defense collapsed. The only blemish on his shooting night was a 6-of-11 clip at the free-throw line, and even that couldn't dent the overall efficiency. His zero-turnover game against a Portland defense that generated steals and pressured the ball made the performance cleaner still.
Portland's Baller #40 kept things respectable with 10 assists and 12 points running the offense, and Baller #98 chipped in 14 points, 8 rebounds, 2 blocks, and no turnovers off the bench. But the Bats shot themselves in the foot at the margins, and New Jersey's depth across all five spots gave them no long stretches to exploit mismatches or rest their starters.
The Scientists improve with the win and move on looking every bit like a team that can generate offense from multiple spots without breaking a sweat. Portland will need to find answers for teams that can spread the floor and slash simultaneously, because Saturday was a blueprint for how to dismantle their defense, one clean look at a time.
